2-10-11 -  I had the opportunity recently to be a judge at our local Grays Harbor Idol, I’m sorry to say that due to time constraints with my current project and computer IT work with my business that I had to pass on the opportunity. In a way I’m really glad and in another way I wish I had time to do it. The whole American Idol thing has been quite entertaining and quite disgusting all at the same time for me. The thing about AI that really is disgusting to me is that we have some really, really great talent out there but the material and songs seem to really be lacking in today’s popular music. So you end up with some really good singers singing some really bad songs. Where is the art in music these days? Lady GaGa? She may be smart, but art? Now that I think about it… Where is the music in music these days? We definitely have a lot of hip-hop’sters and rappers telling us how we should treat our *itche* or was that how to treat our “hoes” and then we have the angry young white kid trying to act like he’s an angry young black kid telling us how angry he is and how *ucke* up things are. On the other hand if you love dancing and choreography American Idol just might be the thing for you. The super bowl half time show was a great example of what I am talking about. In my own opinion it was one of the worst shows ever yet so over the top production wise as to be totally ridiculous. Yet the performances just seemed to be, well… Bad. OK, I digress… maybe it is a very good thing that I do not judge in the Grays Harbor Idol contest. Come to think of it I’m not all that much into idolatry anyways. I could tend embarrass myself.

1-15-11 -  Last Saturday I was in the studio as I am most weekends trying to finish a project I’ve been working on for about 14 months or so. I was getting a bit frustrated and tired of working out keyboard parts (Oppy where are you?) so I decided to take a break away from the tunes for a few minutes so I could re focus. I was tinkering around with the sounds on a Korg X-50 which has a lot of cool synth sounds as well as some cool classic sounds. While I was messing around with this improvised piano piece a news bulletin came over the AP wire about the people that were shot in Arizona by a nutcase. As I was playing I couldn’t help notice the dark and ominous sound of the piece I was making up at the time. Just a simple improvised piece of music that seemed to go with the headlines of the day. After I recorded the piano I overdubbed a bass part and added a simple percussion sequence to hold things together. Then a friend on facebook named Mike Keneally wrote (-uckin- people) and I knew exactly what he was talking about so I had the title of the tune now thanks to Mike. (Mike is a fantastic guitar and keyboard player and is currently touring with Joe Satriani) The tune took about 40 minutes to make up and record. Then after such dark and depressing stuff I had to make up something that was more uplifting which was also a piece that was just improvised on the spot and recorded as I was making it up. I called it “Good to be Alive” it took about 10 minutes to make up and record. Now… back to the real work at hand. The making of the “Dr. Mumbai” record “The World Watches TV”… Have a happy new year everyone!

12-8-10 -  Hello everyone, I hope the holidays are treating you well. Progress in the recording studio has been good lately and I've been able to actually get some tracking done. I was able to finished another tune for the new CD other then maybe a little bass re amping, I like to have several tracks of bass to be able to blend a mix of direct signal and amp signal and I will likely use the Ampeg SVX plug in by IK Multimedia to blend bass tones. After some keyboard programming (Organ, tubular bells, Piano, strings etc.) the tune WTC7 (pull it) is just about ready for the mixing stage. A big thanks goes out to Ty Tabor of KingsX for the wonderful lead guitar work, Marco Minnemann for his world class drumming (you rule dude!), and Pete Griffin for playing some fine bass, also congrats to Pete for being nominated for (another) Grammy award after winning a Grammy for "Best rock instrumental performance" for 2009 while playing with Zappa plays Zappa. All of you are the best and thanks for being part of this humble little project.

11-9-10 -  I think all of the recording is now done (except for maybe one small part) for the tune "On Second thought" it has been a morphing creature for sure as most of my music is. The new version features Kira Small on vocals with one of the rare vocal tunes in a mostly instrumental record.

11-3-10 -  Wow, I haven't updated this page in a couple of months... guess I better get to updating this thing... so that all three of my fans don't miss anything juicy. :-) Ahhh... the life of obscurity. A couple of things to note. I was recently lucky enough to have Kira Small and Bryan Beller here in Aberdeen as musical guests for a private house concert and what a time it was. Good food and friends with some awesome music provided by Kira and Bryan made for a great Saturday evening. Many thanks go out to my wonderful wife Christina for all of the great food and Les Blue at Les Blue's Music Company for the venue. I was fortunate enough to meet Bryan and Kira recently through the recording project I am currently working on. Bryan and Kira are both guest's on my upcoming CD, Kira happens to be singing the only vocal tune on a mostly instrumental record... yes I still call them records after all they are record - ing's right? From vinyl to CD's and from CD's to ... the internet? Yup the days of thumbing through the liner notes are almost gone but the recording and song writing possibilities are endless. I feel a new term coming on... "Cloud Recording" Who would have imagined that we would do records these days by simply transferring data through the air? Into the cloud and on to the next musician to record the next part. OK, I digress. Anyway a good time was had by all. Be sure to check out both Kira and Bryans websites at www.kirasmall.com and www.bryanbeller.com you can find some great music and touring info as well as other goodies.

Current studio work includes lead guitar tracking and some keyboard tracking with my friend Jason Turner. Also... although it hasn't happed yet I got sort of a present by getting an email on my birthday from none other then Dweezil Zappa who mailed me to let me know that he will indeed be a guest player on my new CD. I had not heard from him in some months so I did not want to announce it until I had confirmation. Yeeeesssss....! I've been a fan of Dweezil Zappa for many years and to have him play on one of my songs is truly humbling and thrilling at the same time. Stay tuned for more on this later as things develop with scheduling etc. Dweezil is on the current Guitar Player magazine cover and talks about his band Zappa plays Zappa who won a Grammy award last year for Best Rock Instrumental Performance with the tune by his father Frank called "Peaches en Regalia".

Until next time,

Bill
